Manufacturing industry of Wuxi contributes over 50% to the total GDP with its industrial scale ranking 6th and its industrial technology level takes the lead in all large and medium mainland cities. There have been 72 Fortune 500 companies having invested in Wuxi with 134 projects. Currently Wuxi is designated an investment grade city, and has two large industrial parks devoted to new industry. While current manufacturing centers on textiles, there are projects to move to electric motor manufacturing and MRP software development, and most recently there is a movement toward the solar city of China with two big solar companies (STP and JHL) listed on overseas board.

Foreign Trade progressed with strong momentum, imports and exports reached US$ 51.146 billion, a 30.5 percent increase. Of this, imports were valued at US$ 21.825 billion, an increase of 23.0 percent; Exports US$ 29.321 billion, an increase of 36.8 percent. 5076 Enterprises had import transactions and export transactions, among them, those each achieved a volume of over 100 million US$ totaled 66. Productive enterprises and foreign-funded enterprises witnessed a fast growth in export. The export volume of productive enterprises was US$ 6.333 billion, up 46.4 percent and accounting for 21.6 percent of the city's total. The export volume of foreign-funded enterprises reached US$21.431 billion, a 37.9 percent increase and accounting for 73.1 percent of the city's total. Professional foreign trade companies saw a drop of 1.2 percent in their export. Non-state-owned enterprise fulfilled a rapid increase in their export with a total export volume of 5.763 billion Yuan in 2007, up 56.5 percent over the previous year and accounting for 19.7 percent of the city's total.
